10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning is not fun for many of us. But it is important. As the winter near an end and we begin looking forward to spring and warm weather, something inside of us pushes us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve collected throughout the winter.
But who says spring cleaning is limited to the inside of your house?
The exterior of your home could use some tidying up after a cold, dreary winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will really improve the appearance of your home in Marietta, and, more importantly, will provide much-needed care and maintenance that will save money over the years ahead.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the best time to clean your gutters, because a lot of leaves and debris pile up during the fall and winter. The pollen count is at its highest during the spring, making a big mess in your gutters and downspouts if they are not cleaned.
Plus, bugs and animals are scavenging for places to build their homes during spring, so getting your gutters cleaned will help to stop an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the inside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew and rust stains and returning them to a nice appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Exterior window cleaning is essential for spring cleaning. First floor windows will not give you much of a problem, but any second and third floor windows can be a bit tougher to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a hard job, and will require a lot of supplies, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the best way to get the panes and the outer frame clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You do not want clean gutters and windows on a dirty house. That means you will want to pressure wash your home too!
Pressure washing is fast, effective and doesn’t cost too much. You can pressure clean your house, outdoor furniture, patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with not much effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they will not permanently stain your home, and you can stop the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning might seem silly because you’ll just be driving on it, but actually, a clean, maintained driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.
A professional pressure washing service will do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it’s concrete, asphalt, brick or another material. Also think about adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really make it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio probably gets the most use throughout the summer, so it can be easy to overlook it during the winter when you are not doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio can be in pretty bad shape the first time you go onto it in the spring.
Soap and water – and a little muscle – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you notice signs of mold or mildew, you may need to think about a more aggressive option, like power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer.
6. Roof Cleaning
Algae and moss are common roof issues in Marietta. While you are cleaning the exterior of your home, it’s an excellent time to pressure clean your home’s roof too, but you’ll need to use a different process than what you use for most of your home’s exterior cleaning.
If you notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is probably the cause. Moss is usually obvious, too. These contaminants can’t be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof. Both of these methods will destroy the shingles on your home’s roof.
The best method for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach mixture and leave it be. This solution will eliminate all organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.
7. Spruce up the Front
The front of your home is probably what most people passing by see, so make the best impression possible for visitors, neighbors and for yourself! Returning home to a beautiful exterior will immediately improve your day, and will probably inspire you to spend a lot more time outdoors.
Clean your front porch with detergent and water or a good pressure wash. Wipe cobwebs and dirt off of the front door, and consider painting it a new color for a really bright look! Clean forgotten areas like the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Garden Tools
You will soon be spending much more time outside, so spring is a wonderful opportunity to organize everything you’ll need for outdoor work.
Gardening tools as well as pool care equipment must all have an assigned place outside your home – somewhere that it is safe from weather and not in sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Taking the time to organize in the spring will allow you to enjoy the exterior of your home so much more throughout the time of year that you are going to spend the most time outdoors.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your lawn, trees and garden bushes can make a huge impact on the look of your home.
Eliminate weeds around your flower beds and walkways, till up areas where you might be planting later on and sweep off walkways. You can spray pre-emergent weed poison to make yard maintenance easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for several months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food particles from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but even worse they can make you and your family ill.
Wipe it down to get rid of leftover ash, then scrub the grates with a plastic scrubber or grill brush (so you don’t leave behind metal particles that can get into food) and a basic detergent or degreaser.
